Kids and Families with Diabetes is a Type 1 Diabetes Foundation and Resource center. We were founded by Sandi Louden after the diagnoses of her daughter Jessika who was diagnosed at the age of 10. After Jessika's diagnoses she became withdrawn from everyday activities, and felt all alone. So we decided to start a support group so Jessika could meet other children facing the same challenges.
We currently have children from ages 3-15. We meet on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month @ 6:30 pm at Hebron Lutheran Church located in Hebron Ky. The Goal of our organization is to connect families,by support, advocacy and awareness.
We launched a new program on May 1st called TAP (teen advocacy program). This is a program where the teens can make video's about awareness and advocacy. They will be writing letters to Congress, and to companies about every day concerns such as carb counting and better portion controls etc.. and video chat with others around the world who also have T1D.
Mentoring Program ( Next training to become a mentor will be on April 16th at 6:30 pm)
The diagnosis of type 1 can be overwhelming to a family. We have a mentoring program for newly diagnosed families to be paired up with an experienced T1D family. The more experienced families will be able to reach out to the newer family and answer questions and concerns the newer family may have. The children will also be able to show the newly diagnosed child that life can and does go on.
Monthly activities and Outings
We frequently go on monthly outings, have guest speakers and share information with one another.
We have done outings such as Rollerskating, campfires, pool parties, waterparks and upcoming bowling night.
